At the end of Chapter 1, Laozi uses “perplexity and profundity” 玄 to describe the characteristics of the actualities.
Profundity simply means that an actuality cannot be described clearly by our language (objects). The linguistic description of the actuality will necessarily be fuzzy, uncertain, and self-contradictory. Our linguistic description will certainly appear as “perplexing.” For this reason, the words in the Tao Te Ching often are perplexing and misinterpreted.
Our language is limited. If we understand the logic structure, then we can overcome the limits of our language, so we can perceive the meanings behind the words.
