2. The New Laozi Philosophy

Laozi, Hegel, and Buddha

Preface

To have a “natural, independent” thinking ability, I feel the need for a popular philosophy, as the basis for daily thinking. This philosophy must be borderless and can be in line with the world. As Socrates said, the aim is to free the souls from unrecognized errors.

Therefore, we should look again at Laozi’s philosophy, which has a common logical structure and common principles with Western philosophy and Buddhism. Laozi’s Tao Te Ching maintains the most complete Nonduality in ancient times.

This is a discovery. Laozi’s original logic is universal. The unique Chinese traditional Taoism is due to historical errors. To introduce Laozi’s philosophy, we have to explain the mistakes of traditional Taoism first.

Historical Errors of Taoism

Laozi’s philosophy is distorted by traditional Taoism and has disappeared in China for nearly two thousand years. Now we can be certain that it is due to the mistakes introduced by authority Wang Bi (226-249 CE) who distorts Laozi’s logic in the Tao Te Ching and causes it to lose consistent logic. Under no constraint of logic, traditional scholars select verses from different chapters of the Tao Te Ching, and other ancient books, and combined with their insight to construct novel and mysterious thinking.

Until the nineteenth century, China started to have contact with the West and its thinking was subject to scrutiny. But soon China was under the wars with foreign powers and produced strong “nationalism” to protect the traditional Chinese culture against Western criticisms. Finally, it claims that traditional Taoism is superior to Western ideas and cannot be analyzed with any Western logic. As a result, the logical errors of Taoism remains protected.
